About Course

This course introduces the student to the study of workplace occupational health and safety. The student will learn safe work practices in offices, industry and construction as well as how to identify and prevent or correct problems associated with occupational safety and health in these locations as well as in the home. The course is designed to assist the student with the implementation of safe healthy practices at work and at home.

What Will You Learn?

  • Upon successful completion of this course, the student will have demonstrated the ability to:
  • 1. Identify hazards in the home or workplace that pose a danger or threat to their safety or health, or that of others.
  • 2. Control unsafe or unhealthy hazards and propose methods to eliminate the hazard.
  • 3. Present a coherent analysis of a potential safety or health hazard both verbally and in writing, citing supported legislation.
  • 4. Discuss the role of health and safety in the workplace pertaining to the responsibilities of workers, managers, supervisors.

Course Content

Lecture 1 – FOUNDATION IN OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to: Give reasons why organizations should manage safety and health. Give three direct and indirect costs that might arise from a workplace accident.

Lecture 2 – WORKPLACE HAZARDS AND RISK CONTROL
At the end of this Lesson, you should be able to: Explain the effects of substance misuse on health and safety at work and control measures to reduce such risks Explain the hazards and control measures for the safe movement of people in the workplace Explain the hazards and control measures for safe working at height identify and classify the occupational health and safety hazards in a workplace

Lecture 3 – HEALTH RISK ASSESSMENT (HRA) AND CONTROL
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to: State the aim of HRA Identify the types of HRA Describe the process of risk assessment

Lecture 4 – ACCIDENT AND INCIDENT INVESTIGATION
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to: Describe the causes of accidents Explain the theories of accident causation

Lecture 5 – ACCIDENT AND INCIDENT INVESTIGATION 2
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to: Explain the theories of accident causation Describe the steps in the process of accident investigation.

Lecture 7 – PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
Learning objectives Identify the requirements for PPE. Evaluate a variety of PPE devices and determine the types of equipment necessary for your type of work. Understand the training requirements for your workers on proper usage of PPE.
